LASCO Curves gives wings to the educational pursuits of seven outstanding young ladies
St. Catherine, Jamaica: Following outstanding results in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), seven young ladies from across the island were awarded scholarships totalling $350,000 towards their secondary education.
The students, who will enter high school for the upcoming academic year scholarships, will receive $50,000 each towards fees and supplies courtesy of Curves, LASCO Distributors Limited’s personal care brand.
The scholarship recipients are: Abbey-Gayle Higgins and Keonie Graham, who will both attend Immaculate Conception High; Kristine Williams to attend St. Hilda’s High School; Ashlee Brown passed for Campion College; Daniel Williams and Danielle Edwards will attend Montego Bay and DeCarteret College respectively; and Nicole Johnson will attend St. Andrew High School for Girls. The Lascelles Chin helmed company, LASCO Distributors Limited, hosted the recipients at the White Marl facility on Thursday, August 4, where they were each officially presented with their awards.
CEO of the Jamaica’s Teaching Council, Dr. Winsome Gordon, held LASCO in high regard for their continued role in Jamaica’s education system.
“LASCO has been an active partner in education for many years,” stated Dr. Gordon. “And it is not shrinking despite the economy. LASCO’s partnership is growing. They are very much prepared to help children and to help the education system to be effective in many ways.”
Dr. Gordon also noted that LASCO is responsible for the Teacher of the Year and the Principal of the Year programme.
Now in its third year, the LASCO/Curves GSAT Scholarship was established to empower young women across the island by directly aiding their educational pursuits.
The recipients were chosen from top performing female students from each of the six Ministry of Education regions across the island, with a seventh awardee chosen from Allman Town Primary School, home of the LASCO/ MoE Principal of the Year winner, Kandi-Lee Crooks-Smith.
Proud parents, who accompanied their daughter to the handover luncheon, expressed gratitude citing the importance of getting a good start in High School.
“We’re absolutely grateful to LASCO for this gift,” stated Sherine Higgins, mother of Abbey-Gayle Higgins. “As it has been said, every mikkle makes a mukkle, and this scholarship does add value to whatever it is we need to spend on, as back-to-school costs are not small by any means.”
